Intro

This text - composed mid-January 2023 - was a supplement to the German version of (VI) Farewell MCI: Design Thinking & Idea Development, including the latest HM063 student-statements, as well as a list of all the courses given at the bbw-Hochschule from 2016 to 2023.

The first series of courses started in the framework of a bachelor-program in German. Then this theme was introduced into the MCI-master-class series.

HM063 Specific notes

As indicated in the Housekeeping remarks

– The Portfolio Exams for this course will be divided at least into three parts. The first two parts will be on premises, part three is the final paper-delivery-date (Note: only PDF’s will be accepted).
> December 11th, 16th, 17th. (individual only): oral (+notes)
> January 6th, 13th, (individual/or group): presentation
> March 31st, (individual/or group): (written) paper.
Therefore, the final grade [4] will be split into at least 3 parts.

 5 students participated and passed on part One
 7 students participated and passed on part Two [5]
 1 student presented his results at the premises on February, 17th, 2023
 8 students had the chance to present their upgrades and paper up to the end of March 2023 - and they used it all!

The credit-value of part One is 20%, of part Two is 50% and of part Three will be 30%. This allows the ’latecomers’ who did not take part in December to assemble enough points to pass the exam as well.

I. Chat GPT:

Mid December 2022, Zeynep Tufekci asked in The New York Times: What would Plato Say About ChatGPT?
His last chapter says:

The way forward is not to just lament supplanted skills, as Plato did, but also to recognize that as more complex skills become essential, our society must equitably educate people to develop them. And then it always goes back to the basics. Value people as people, not just as bundles of skills.

And this is his recommendation:

Teachers could assign a complicated topic and allow students to use such tools as part of their research. Assessing the veracity and reliability of these A.I.-generated notes and using them to create an essay would be done in the classroom, with guidance and instruction from teachers. The goal would be to increase the quality and the complexity of the argument.

When AI systems like GPT-3 and ChatGPT write entire student papers in seconds, teaching will have to redefine terms like "education" and "performance."

Looking at all these developments, even text-writing-service providers as ESSAY LIB may review their price-list (sic!).

More than half of the participants have used the opportunity to undertake the effort, presenting a detailed list of answers to a whole series of questions. Here are just the final notes:
