Am Donnerstag, den 18. Februar, endete die 14. Edition von Berlinale Talents mit der Masterclass von Oscarpreisträger und Regisseur Alex Gibney. Sechs Tage wurde das HAU Hebbel am Ufer für insgesamt 300 Filmschaffende und über 150 Experten aus der ganzen Welt zum Mittelpunkt für interkulturellen Dialog, Networking und praktischen Austausch über neueste Filmtrends.

Unter dem Thema „The Nature of Relations” erforschte Berlinale Talents die inneren Zusammenhänge filmischer Erzählstrukturen sowie neue gemeinsame Arbeitsformen in Produktion und Distribution. In über 100 Veranstaltungen trafen die Talente auf international renommierte Experten, darunter Meryl Streep, Brigitte Lacombe, Lars Eidinger, Alba Rohrwacher, Alex Gibney, Thomas Vinterberg, Denis Côté, Michael Ballhaus, Roy Andersson, Michel Franco und viele mehr.

Den Auftakt machte am Sonntag die diesjährige Jurypräsidentin der Berlinale Meryl Streep in einem viel beachteten Bühnengespräch. Regisseur Denis Côté machte den Talenten Mut: „Dinge passieren, wenn man für sie kämpft. Mit einer starken Persönlichkeit und einer klaren Vision steht am Ende der Erfolg.“ Auch an den folgenden Tagen wurden die vielen Dimensionen im Beziehungsgeflecht erkundet: „Beziehungen sind Liebe. Beziehungen sind Sex. Sie sind Networking. Wie man sich mit Menschen in Beziehung setzt, entscheidet darüber, wie man in der Welt überlebt“, erklärte Dogma-95-Mitbegründer Thomas Vinterberg. Die Filmeditorin Molly M. Steensgard, die dieses Jahr erneut als Expertin zu Berlinale Talents kam, fasste den Geist der Veranstaltung so zusammen: „Es gibt hier ein starkes Gemeinschaftsgefühl, das sich über Erfahrungen, Alter und nationale Grenzen hinwegsetzt. Es ist für mich ausgesprochen wertvoll, hier Menschen zu begegnen, die ich sonst nicht treffen könnte.“

Berlinale Talents entdeckt, unterstützt und fördert

Die diesjährige Ausgabe von Berlinale Talents steht auch für den Erfolg der Initiative, gemeinsam mit den Programmsektionen der Berlinale Talente zu entdecken, zu unterstützen und langfristig zu fördern. Insgesamt 111 Alumni nahmen mit insgesamt 84 Filmen an der Berlinale teil. Einige davon kehrten als Experten zu Berlinale Talents zurück. Umgekehrt waren von den teilnehmenden Talenten bereits über 50 mit Filmen in vorherigen Berlinale-Ausgaben vertreten. Sie wurden mit ihren Erfahrungen aktiv in das Programm und in die zahlreichen neuen Formate eingebunden. „Das Level an Erfahrung war herausragend. Talente, Alumni und Experten trafen sich auf Augenhöhe. Wir freuen uns, dass Berlinale Talents als eines der führenden Talentförderprogramme zum Austausch von Ideen und Entwickeln von Filmprojekten so begeistert angenommen wird“, resümierten die Leiter von Berlinale Talents, Christine Tröstrum und Florian Weghorn.

Neue Partnerschaften

Die neue Netzwerkpartnerschaft zwischen Kickstarter und Berlinale Talents fördert Talente und Alumni aus aller Welt und unterstützt sie bei der Umsetzung von Projekten. Filmemacher mit Interesse an Crowdfunding erhalten exklusive Beratung vom Kickstarterteam. Ihre Kampagnen werden auf einer kuratierten Partnerseite präsentiert und über die Social-Media-Kanäle von Berlinale Talents und Kickstarter geteilt.

Der neue Co-Partner Nespresso präsentierte den Vertical Video Wettbewerb „Nespresso Talents 2016“ im Rahmen von Berlinale Talents. Filmbeiträge können vom 7. März bis 10. April 2016 auf www.nespresso.com/talents eingereicht werden. Die Gewinner erhalten 6.000 Euro sowie eine Reise zum diesjährigen Filmfestival in Cannes. Dort werden die Gewinner am 12. Mai 2016 verkündet.

Preisverleihungen im Rahmen der Berlinale Talents

Auch in diesem Jahr wurden wieder Preise an Filmemacher während Berlinale Talents vergeben.
Im Rahmen des „Talent Project Markets“ ging der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte VFF Talent Highlight Pitch Award an das Projekt Tank, welches von dem Produzenten Max Serdiuk aus der Ukraine präsentiert wurde. Die mit jeweils 1.000 Euro dotierten Nominierungspreise gingen an die argentinische Produzentin Cecilia Salim sowie an den norwegischen Produzenten Gary Cranner.
Die Robert Bosch Stiftung verlieh während Berlinale Talents die mit bis zu 70.000 Euro dotierten Filmförderpreise für internationale Kooperationen zwischen deutschen und arabischen Filmemachern:

— Animation: Four Acts for Syria, Regisseure Waref Abu Quba und Kevork Mourad, Syrien / Produzentin Eva Illmer, Deutschland.
— Dokumentarfilm: Miguel’s War, Regisseurin und Produzentin Eliane Raheb, Libanon / Produzenten Lissi Muschol und Margot Haiböck, Deutschland.
— Kurzfilm: Tshweesh, Regisseur Feyrouz Serhal, Libanon / Produzenten Lara Abou Saifan, Libanon und Stefan Gieren, Deutschland.

On Thursday evening, February 18, the 14th edition of Berlinale Talents came to a successful close with the master class of Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney. During the six-day event, 300 film creatives and over 150 internationally renowned experts turned the HAU Hebbel am Ufer into a hub for networking, intercultural exchange and discussing the latest trends in film.

Under its theme “The Nature of Relations”, Berlinale Talents explored the inner connections of cinematic storytelling and new ways of collaborative working in production and distribution. In over 100 events the Talents met internationally noted authorities from the world of film, among them Meryl Streep, Brigitte Lacombe, Lars Eidinger, Alba Rohrwacher, Alex Gibney, Thomas Vinterberg, Denis Côté, Michael Ballhaus, Roy Andersson, Michel Franco and many others.

The programme started on Sunday with this year’s Berlinale Jury President Meryl Streep’s remarkable on-stage conversation. Director Denis Côté encouraged the Talents: “Things happen if you fight for them to happen. If you have a strong personality and a strong personal vision it is going to work at some point.” The following days, the summit explored the multiple dimensions of relations. “Relation is love. It is sex. It is networking. How you relate to people is how you survive in this world,” explained Dogme 95 co-founder Thomas Vinterberg. And returning once again this year, editor Molly M. Steensgard summarized the spirit at Berlinale Talents: “It gives you a strong sense of community. It is also across experiences and across age and across countries, so it is valuable to me to meet people that I wouldn’t meet elsewhere.”

Discovering, Supporting and Developing Talent

This year’s edition was also a tribute to the success of Berlinale Talents, together with the other programme sections of the Berlinale, in discovering, supporting and developing talent in film. 111 alumni participated with 84 films at the Berlin International Film Festival, with many also invited to the summit as experts. With over 50 Talents already having had films at previous Berlinale editions, the participants were also lead to assume a more active role and contributed with their experience in many new formats. “The level of experience was outstanding. Talents, alumni and experts met at eye-level. We are delighted that Berlinale Talents as a leading talent development programme for exchanging ideas and developing film projects was received so enthusiastically” said the heads of Berlinale Talents Christine Tröstrum and Florian Weghorn.

New Partners

Kickstarter and Berlinale Talents join forces in a network partnership to promote Talents and alumni around the world and help them to bring projects to life. Film professionals with interest in crowdfunding receive exclusive mentorship by the Kickstarter team. Their campaigns are highlighted on a curated partner page and shared in the social media channels of Berlinale Talents and Kickstarter.
The new co-partner Nespresso has launched the vertical video contest “Nespresso Talents 2016”. The competition is open for entries March 7 through April 10, 2016, on www.nespresso.com/talents. Winners will be announced on May 12, 2016 and receive 6,000 Euros each and a trip to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Awards during Berlinale Talents

Once again, prizes were awarded to filmmakers during Berlinale Talents.
Within the framework of the Talent Project Market, the 10,000 Euros VFF Talent Highlight Pitch Award went to the project Tank, which had been presented by producer Max Serdiuk from the Ukraine. Cash prizes endowed with 1,000 Euros each were awarded for the nomination of their projects to the Argentinian producer Cecilia Salim and the Norwegian producer Gary Cranner.

The Robert Bosch Stiftung awarded during Berlinale Talents film prizes to promote international cooperation between German and Arab filmmakers, endowed with a maximum of 70,000 Euros each:
