In the Las Vegas Convention Center Room S222
Produced by the Entertainment Technology Center at USC, Sunday’s program examines how digital technologies are transforming how movies are made. Using case studies, neutral analysis and user experiences, the sessions will look at 3-D production and postproduction: new digital cameras; color management software and services; and production and postproduction projectors and displays.

Quote from the NAB 2006 Update - by James Mathers, President DCS
James Cameron and the Digital Cinema Summit
Simply put, James Cameron is passionate about Digital Cinema, and when the Filmmaker responsible for the highest grossing film in motion picture history speaks, people listen. In his Digital Cinema Summit Keynote, and later when I had the pleasure to spend some one-on-one time with him via the introduction of a mutual friend, I discovered his deep commitment to not only shoot his own future projects with the latest digital technology, but also to encourage others, and to try to push digital exhibition forward. He believes 3D will advance the cause of digital exhibition and may even be the ticket to reverse theatrical box office decline.
Cameron is not the evangelical fanatic that Robert Rodriguez sometimes seems to border on, but rather a reasoned Filmmaker and Businessman. For example, when asked about shooting 4K and above, his retort was, “What Actress wants to be shot with a 4K camera?” He seems to feel, as I do, that 4K for other than very specialized process photography is probably not necessary, and at least for now, is way beyond the point of diminishing returns. Although he and others have had success with HDcam, he feels that 2K would be an improvement, and a reasonable standard for his future productions. He doesn’t push new technology for it’s own sake, but as an Artist, he appreciates any new tools that can help him to tell stories in new and interesting ways; and as a Businessman, he points to the advantages of 3D and digital encryption to thwart piracy, as well as the obvious savings over film print delivery and exhibition. Titanic was still going strong in theatrical exhibition, he relates, until they had to pull the prints, simply because they were deteriorating and he was no longer able to make acceptable dupes off his internegatives. Had it been a digital release, the first screening would have looked as good as the one millionth, with the color, contrast, and image quality he intended as the film’s Author.
